In 2010, Gap drafted its first human-rights policy, one that covers not only its wholly owned operations but also its apparel supply chain. Modeled after international charters and declarations such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Global Compact, and the International Labor Organization's Declaration on Fundamentals and Rights at Work, the policy outlines fundamental principles such as the prohibition of child or forced labor, freedom of association, the right to collective bargaining, and protection from discrimination.
