Between pale, barely there nudes (Alexander Wang, Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg) and opulent, theatrical kissers (Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu), runway lips left no middle ground at New York Fashion Week. We asked some of our favorite eco-beauty experts—including makeup artist Jessa Blades, Spirit Demerson of Spirit Beauty Lounge, Ann Francke of Beautorium, and Terri Bly of Nature of Beauty—how to play up our puckers without succumbing to offensive ingredients like parabens, petrochemicals, and lead. From understated neutrals to blistering scarlets, here are six of their best, lipsmacking bets.
“I loved the trend toward a very natural looking lip, in both matte and glossy finishes,” Ann Francke, president and co-founder of Beautorium, tells Ecouterre. She suggests Suki’s Pure Cream Stain, which pulls double duty as a lipstick and blush. Organic jojoba oil quenches parched skin, organic chamomile extract mollifies any irritation, while organic and fair-trade Shea butter softens and smoothes. Another plus: The 100 percent natural-mineral-derived pigments can be layered on until you achieve your desired intensity, whether you prefer a subtle wash or a dramatic pop of color.
Perfect Organics’ vegan-friendly lip shimmers come in seven luminous shades, from the subtle yet sexy Sydney to the rich, velvety London. Made with certified-organic ingredients, including mega-moisturizers like argan oil, Shea butter, aloe vera, and macademia nut oil, these cheek- and lip-tinting multi-taskers also include a hint of peppermint for a cool, tingling sensation.
GO FOR THE GLOW
Rich, bold, and saturated, Lip Love by Afterglow Cosmetics amps up the drama in a whopping 15 delectable hues, which run the gamut from delicate pale pinks to full-bodied merlots. With certified-organic ingredients to plump, pander, and nourish, these ultra-creamy lip definers are 100 percent natural, as well as hypoallergenic, to boot.
Spirit Demerson, curator of Spirit Beauty Lounge, was inspired by the retro-red Cupid’s bows that came down the Marc Jacobs runway, which she describes as a “super-bright, optimistic” shade that anyone can pull off. “The key to bright lips,” Demerson says, “is to go really low-key with the rest of the face palette, and to even out the skin with a matte mineral powder foundation, so that the lips really pop.” Her pick: NVEY’s Organic Lipstick in “Real Red Shine,” which delivers saturated, vitamin-enriched color that glides on like silk.
LIP TO CHEEK TO CHEEK
For beauty consultant and makeup artist Jessa Blades, the Lip2Cheek from RMS Beauty spans the spectrum from bare-lipped (“Muse”) to brassy (“Rapture”). The two-in-one glass pots make adding hydration, coverage, and definition to your punim as easy as sweeping your finger across your face. Comprising certified-organic ingredients such as Shea butter, beeswax, and cold-pressed coconut, jojoba, and argan oils, the mineral pigments hydrate, enrich, and tone your epidermis, while adding flushes of color to your favorite defining features.
COULEUR YOUR WORLD
“Couleur Caramel’s lip colour and glosses are unmatched in the natural cosmetics world when it comes to intensity of color and shine,” says Terri Bly, founder and president of Nature of Beauty. “And they last forever.” Packed with a raft of certified-organic ingredients, including skin-softening olive wax, vitamin-infused grape seed oil, and antioxidant-rich Rooibos extract, the 100 percent natural lipsticks come in 24 different shades, in matte, pearly, or glittery finishes. For the au naturel pout, choose Clear or Light Pink. If show-stopping lips are on the cards, Raspberry, True Red, and Fuschia are your poisons.
