Announcing the Winners of the 2012 EcoChic Design Hong Kong Award!

Firstly, Redress presented The EcoChic Design Award Hong Kong 2012 Grand Final fashion show. This finale concluded six grueling educational and competitive months of sustainable design, theory and judging rounds for six Hong Kong fashion designers. Following three challenging competition judging rounds in the hans of Asia’s fashion design judge heavyweights, Wister Tsang was announced as The EcoChic Design Award Hong Kong 2012 Winner.  Wister will now design a sustainable collection for Esprit made using recycled textiles in a move that will re-style Asia’s sustainable fashion retail therapy options for the increasingly influential high street in China.

“I am honoured to win this award and contribute to Asia´s growing sustainable fashion movement,” Wister tells Ecouterre. “This is a career changing opportunity for me and I’m excited about designing Esprit’s next sustainable collection and seeing my designs on the streets of Asia. I want to inspire other designers to have the creativity, conviction and courage to embrace sustainable fashion design,” he adds.

Hot behind him but voted by the public was Angus Tsui who won The EcoChic People´s Award Hong Kong 2012 in partnership with the British Council. Angus, together with Wister, will go to London for a unique educational tour of the UK´s pioneering sustainable fashion scene. During this cultural exchange trip, the winners will attend Estethica, London Fashion Week’s highly acclaimed sustainable fashion trade fair.

In promoting the positive power of fashion, Redress didn’t stop here.

To nurture Hong Kong´s sustainable designers, Redress opened their runway up to their 2011 competition alumni to give these fledgling sustainable fashion designers with a platform to uncover this new era of textile-waste-reducing sustainable fashion. Redress’ second fashion show featured last year’s competition winner, Janko Lam, along with three other EcoChic Design Award Hong Kong 2011 Grand Finalists, Aman Cheung, Yuri Man and Eric Wong, who have each further developed or launched their own sustainable brands since the competition’s debut last year. Following the alumni fashion show, Yuri Man was offered a mentorship with a href=”http://www.ecouterre.com/queen-of-upcycling-orsola-de-castros-tips-for-emerging-designers”>Orsola de Castro, co-founder of British fashion label From Somewhere and one of the judges, to prepare her application for Estethica, London Fashion Week’s sustainable-fashion platform.

“Hong Kong and Mainland China’s fashion designers are uniquely positioned to alter China’s textile-waste pattern,” de Castro says. “Once designers have the chance to experience sustainable fashion design, few turn back. I’m delighted to mentor Yuri so she can break into the international sustainable fashion scene and reduce the fashion industry’s negative impacts on the environment.”
