The 21st century soldier bears a heavy burden, literally. With 100 to 150 pounds of weaponry, tactical gear, communication devices, and military rations—and that’s just for starters—army personnel also have to lug along hefty battery packs to keep their gadgets juiced. To help lighten the load, researchers at the Australian National University in Canberra devised wearable solar panels capable of powering electronic equipment in the field. The thread that ties these disparate enterprises together becomes apparent with Oakes’ latest endeavor: Source4Style, a trade-only online marketplace that allows designers to find, compare, and buy sustainable textiles from a network of global suppliers at the touch of a button. We’ve been enamored with eco-fashion visionary Leanne Marshall ever since she debuted her unique designs on Project Runway back in 2008. (In case you missed it, she went on to win Season 5′s grand prize with her highly original sculptural designs.) We saw Mr. Larkin’s amazing Spring/Summer 2010 collection on the runway this past week at the GreenShows and fell madly in love with the innovative yet totally wearable, beautifully crafted looks. We swooned over the fabulous looks on the runway, but quick research into Mr. Larkin’s production process left us even more impressed because every garment is meticulously hand dyed with natural materials, such as berries, acorns, maple leaves, mint, and iron!

Say the words “eco fashion” and most people think of hugging trees in tame, soft-hued, hippyish garb. We don’t buy into this stereotype, of course, but here’s something we definitely did NOT see coming while checking out the GreenShows shows during New York Fashion Week: Ashley Dupré, best-known as the call girl who brought down Eliot Spitzer’s governorship, walked the runway at Bahar Shahpar’s fashion show on Tuesday afternoon. It’s a rare rare thing when the tabloid world crosses into the world of eco-fashion, and one that might bring a little more attention to Bahar’s already-provocative line than would normally have been the case.
