Beth Ditto, frontwoman for the band Gossip, envisions a line of plus-size clothing that would be the “IKEA of clothes for fat girls and boys,” according to New York’s Vulture blog. “It wouldn’t be crazy designs—it would be simple,” she says. “Cheap, affordable, basic—but ethically made.” Ditto developed a plus-size collection for U.K. retailer Evans in 2009 but her involvement was limited. “I wish there was more control in that line, but there wasn’t,” she says. “It was really fun, but the things that I really wanted couldn’t be turned around in time. It was made in India, which caused a lot of conflict for me.”

MASS APPEAL

Besides a line that’s ethically made—one, she says, that she can do “whatever the fuck” she wants with—Ditto is also considering an online vintage store along the lines of Re/Dress, which caters to sizes 14 and up.

“I want to do a ‘buy the outfit’ function, and I want to show how outfits look on all kinds of different body types, even boys and butches,” she says. “It’s high concept, and I don’t have time. I’d need to find someone to work with me on it, but I’m also very controlling about this, just like I am with Gossip stuff.”
