A relative newcomer to the eco-fashion scene, designer Carrie Parry added a notch to her belt when she kicked off Bloomingdale’s Earth Month festivities last week. Parry was on hand all weekend, meeting and greeting Bloomies’ shoppers as they perused selections from her inaugural collection. But the “shopper” who stood out most from the crowd was Bloomingdale’s own operating vice president of women’s fashion direction, Stephanie Solomon. Ecouterre saw Solomon’s enthusiastic response to Parry’s line firsthand as she flew in and out of the space. We kicked off our shoes and chased her down soon after to pick her brain about Parry and sustainability in fashion.

What are your favorite pieces from Carrie Parry’s debut collection?

One of my favorite pieces is the little bell-shaped skirt—that would be perfect for anyone! I also loved the ’70s-inspired shift dress in the psychedelic print.

We love that dress, too! How would you wear it?

I would wear it belted, with high heels.

Do you have other suggestions on how your would style Parry’s pieces?

Her entire collection is versatile; there are so many ways to wear each piece. For example, the bell-shaped skirt could be worn with a T-shirt at the beach, a jacket for the office, or a beaded top for the evening.

What’s your favorite aspect of the line?

One part of her collection that I really respect is that she supports artisanal communities around the globe, such as in India, when sourcing her materials. She reaches out to a world outside of 7th Avenue to build the collection, and even utilizes the talents of other women. I have the utmost respect for such a young designer.

If you missed Parry’s trunk show at Bloomingdale’s, don’t worry. You’ll be able to purchase her entire Fall/Winter 2011 line on her website come August. Fall couldn’t come sooner for us.
