Vaute, Farm Sanctuary Host “Fashion Loves Animals” Vegan Runway Show

VAUTE Couture made yet another appearance at Fashion Loves Animals to celebrate and raise awareness about the benefits of vegan fashion. The fashion show and cocktail party honored Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, President and Creative Director of VAUTE Couture, with benefits going toward Farm Sanctuary’s work. Demonstrating that stylish looks can be accomplished using all vegan labels, Hilgart included Love is Mighty, Brave Gentleman, Matt & Nat and cruelty-free makeup by The Body Shop in the show. And of course, several small furry friends made an appearance throughout the night both on and off the runway.

Giant Astronaut Suit Hosts Fashion Show Inspired by Soviet Space Program

This amazing installation is a giant replica of a space suit, the garment worn by the first woman in space, the Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. Mother Earth Sister Moon is the colossal intervention by Joanna Malinowska and Christian Tomaszewski, Polish-born artists based in New York. The duo created the compelling artwork as a fashion and design showcase, reflecting how the future was imagined during the Communist Regimes of the former Soviet Union.

Titania Inglis returned to New York Fashion Week on Wednesday with her Fall/Winter 2013 collection. Inspired by fairytales and parallel universes, the collection highlighted the designer’s knack for geometric shapes and sharply angled silhouettes. Featuring dark, wintery hues, the collection had a mysterious aura and featured a new addition to Inglis’ line: furs. Need not worry. The designer was quick to explain the responsible sourcing practices behind her decision to incorporate them into her collection.

Voz Brings Artisan-Crafted Chilean Knits to Fall 2013 NY Fashion Week

Voz celebrated its first New York Fashion Week by showing off its latest collection of hand-woven wool, baby alpaca and llama shawls, ponchos, tunics, dresses and coats. The Chile-based fair trade company works with Mapuche women artisans who practice traditional weaving methods to create designs that are attractive to a contemporary audience. For its NYFW debut, the company expanded its list of materials to include raw silk and silk chiffon and featured jewelry by Mikuti.

Leanne Marshall Flirts With the Dark Side at Fall 2013 NY Fashion Week

Leanne Marshall’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection has a heavier and more serious feeling than previous collections. Filled with black, golds and corals, the collection featured fine fabrics treated with a variety of plant-based, natural dyes. The former Season 5 Project Runway winner veered away from the more pastel-based, light, petally look that has tended to define the label. Instead, Marshall found inspiration in the organic, imperfections she saw in a mushroom and her designs grew from there. Check out Ecouterre’s exclusive photos from the show.

Costello Tagliapietra “Knit”-Picks at Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week

Only fools mistake femininity for weakness, and if there’s one thing Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra are not, it’s foolish. The married duo’s signature elements were on full display at New York Fashion Week on Thursday: the draped silk and jersey dresses, the saturated jewel tones, the watercolor-esque AirDye prints. But they also ventured outside their typical milieu by plying their Fall/Winter 2013 collection with brown alpaca “teddy bear” wrap coats, vine-knit capelet cardigans, and even a two-toned tailored trouser, cordovan in front, steel gray in the back—the sartorial equivalent of an iron fist in a velvet glove.

Samantha Pleet may have taken a break from formally presenting her FW2013 collection, but the young designer has by no means been standing idle. Celebrating the opening of her new Manhattan showroom, the designer took the opportunity to invite friends and loyal clients to preview her latest collection as well as new shoe and boot designs from her ongoing collaboration with Wolverine for the 1000 Mile Collection by Samantha Pleet. With a focus on form and signature silhouettes, the collection features a painterly color palette and several playful prints with ethically-sourced fabrics ranging from silk to wool to velvet. Ecouterre was in attendance to learn more about the Expressionist and Post-Impressionist artwork that inspired the former painting student’s latest designs.

EDUN Rocks, Rolls at Fall/Winter 2013 New York Fashion Week

It’s virtually impossible to tease EDUN apart from its rock-star provenance. Such is the star power of U2 frontman Bono, who founded the socially conscious label with his wife, Ali Hewson, in 2005. And indeed, the mood at its Fall/Winter 2013 presentation—an “exploration of youth culture,” according to show notes—at New York Fashion Week on Thursday was equally charged. Models, both male and female, paced frenetically on the circular runway wearing black leather, black skinny jeans, black lamé, and a studied insouciance. (Full review to follow.)

Get Kimberly Ovitz’s 3D-Printed Jewelry Straight Off the Runway

Fallen in love with the jewelry Kimberly Ovitz feted at New York Fashion Week on Thursday? You don’t have to be a fashion insider to snag them straight off the runway. The Manhattan-based designer used three-dimensional printing to create the accessories, which she made available for purchase immediately after the show. A collaboration with rapid-prototyping marketplace Shapeways, the pieces include a necklace, a bracelet, and two styles of earring in either nylon or stainless steel. All of the pieces are designed to cleave to the wearer’s body like armornor a second skin. “The future of fashion is now,” says Ovitz of the print-on-demand baubles, which cost between $35 and $495. How’s that for fast fashion?

Suzanne Rae Takes the Habit at Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week

Suzanne Rae FW2013 is all about self-confidence and feeling comfortable with your inner self. Drawing inspiration from a unique sector of the service industry, Suzanne Rae Pelaez turned to the complex yet modest clothing of missionary monks, priests and nuns- a sector that promotes love and goodness by offering aid to those in need. Pelaez told Ecouterre, “I wanted to make thought-provoking clothing that encouraged women to have the kind of confidence that offers goodness and love and really positive, loving vibes.” Pelaez has created a minimalist line of elegantly cut designs dominated by sleek silhouettes and linear geometry that create a clean look. Her garments were accompanied by zero-waste knit pieces designed in collaboration with local knitwear designer Lindsay Degen, adding a lush, tactile element to the collection.

PETA Parodies NY Fashion Week With Animals in “Runway Reversal”

Just in time for New York Fashion Week, a new parody video from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals about the use of exotic skins on the runway. In a reversal of roles, foxes, antelopes, and seals strut on the catwalk in grisly outfits derived from human parts, while naked people, surrounded by bloody carcasses and body parts, are confined to cages backstage. The camera homes in on a young Chinese girl, the only caged human clearly visible, as she quivers from cold and fear. It’s somewhat of a “gotcha” moment, all the more shocking because of the whimsical atmosphere that precedes it.

Selena Gomez Targeted by Sweatshop Protestors at NY Fashion Week

Labor-rights activists want Selena Gomez to “be an ambassador for children, not for sweatshops.” Protestors from United Students Against Sweatshops ambushed the former Disney starlet at New York Fashion Week on Thursday at the first runway show for Neo by Adidas, a teen-oriented diffusion label for which Gomez serves as style ambassador. Outside the midtown Manhattan venue, a group of 15 people, including two former sweatshop workers, held up a banner that read, “Selena: Don’t be an ambassador for sweatshops.” A woman also handed the 20-year-old UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador a flier urging her to tell Adidas to pay its Indonesian workers $1.8 million in severance so they can feed their children and send them to school.

For Organic‘s Fall/Winter 2013 collection, designer John Patrick revisited his personal connection to the East Village, NYC’s downtown neighborhood known of its hip, grungy-chic style. Patrick was inspired by three indie “glamazons” and friends, Sable Starr, Cyrinda Foxe and Anya Phillips. Wednesday morning during New York Fashion Week, Patrick displayed a collection that spoke to those downtown tastemakers. “The catwalk is meant to tell a story and create an emotion,” he told Ecouterre after his show.

Vegan diets are all the craze but vegan fashion is a term that is gaining traction as the likes of Vaute begin to hit the runway. The emerging label by Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart had its first ever NY Fashion Week premier yesterday, marking it as the first animal-rights all vegan fashion label to show during New York Fashion Week. The young designer is building upon the outerwear and tee line she’s had for several years to show off a ready-to-wear line that includes tops, satin dresses, skirts, pants and sweaters made from vegan and eco fabrics for both men and women. Issey Miyake Creates Heat-Retaining Menswear From Recycled Polyester

Issey Miyake’s timing couldn’t be more apt. As temperatures at Paris Men’s Fashion Week plunged below zero on Thursday—and the City of Lights faced its worst blizzard conditions in 20 years—the Franco-Japanese fashion house feted a lightweight, heat-retaining wardrobe that almost seemed to anticipate climate change’s role in worsening winters. Sure enough, the blinding cavalcade of quilted overcoats, sporty jackets, hooded anoraks, and utilitarian cargo pants provided more than a few nods to the future, imagined or prophesied. Metallic accents gave way to gilded panels, which yielded to reflective suits of gold, silver, and bronze. (The last was said to generate as much warmth as five or six emergency blankets, but without the bulk.)

Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton gave Paris Fashion Week attendees something to buzz home about. Bees, butterflies, honeycombs, and wildflowers flitted down the runway in a pollen-induced haze of corsets and crinoline—a nod, perhaps, to the unsung heroes behind the scenes. “I don’t know what started it,” Burton told Vogue backstage before the show. “Maybe female worker bees, like all of us in the studio.” The look balanced McQueen maximalism with dominatrix-like precision: iridescent brocade jackets with nipped-in wasp waists, organza-and-tulle ball gowns bearing appliqué flowers in suspension, bondage-style harnesses made from caramel-colored tortoiseshell resin.

Just call Julia Skergeth a designer who goes against the grain. The Kingston University student turned the traditional stiletto on its head, after all, when she built a vertiginous heel using little more than rice, silicone, and bio-resin. Already, the towering footwear is turning heads—and heels. Unveiled during London Fashion Week in September, the concept won Skergeth at the prestigious Vauxhall Fashion Scout showcase—not bad for someone only in the first year of her postgraduate studies.

Karl Lagerfeld might have renewable energy on the brain. (Or not. It’s hard to tell with a man who once shipped a 265-ton iceberg from Sweden as a runway centerpiece.) For his Spring/Summer 2013 show on Tuesday, the Chanel chief was all about le spectacle, filling the cavernous hall of the Grand Palais in Paris with towering wind turbines and a tiled catwalk that evoked the appearance of solar panels. But was it a political statement? “I started to sketch in St. Tropez over the summer and it was so hot I wanted some fresh air,” Lagerfeld told reporters afterwards. Translation: non.

Phoebe Philo, who had her third child in April, definitely knows the way to Sesame Street. How else do you explain the fur-clad pumps and pool sandals at Céline’s Spring/Summer 2013 show at Paris Fashion Week? Instead of the sleek loafer pumps of seasons past, Philo planted her models’ feet in retina-searing hues of mink: Elmo red, Cookie Monster blue, and Big Bird yellow, to be exact. We don’t know whether to call People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals or Super Grover.
