Karl Lagerfeld Ships 265 Ton Artic Iceberg to Paris for Fashion Show

A political statement about climate change was the last thing on Karl Lagerfeld’s mind when he trotted Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection in front of a giant, 265-ton glacier in Paris on Tuesday. (He counts the Ice Hotel in Sweden, not drowning polar bears, as his inspiration.) But can an iceberg be just an iceberg in these post-COP15 times? “Have you felt any warming this winter?” Lagerfeld asked reporters after the show. “Maybe that’s all nonsense, who knows.” Et tu, Karl?

New York Fashion Week was in full swing last week, and while some gathered at the tents, those of us looking for truly innovative, cutting-edge eco-fashion headed to NOW Showcase in Chelsea. This cooperative lineup of emerging fashion talent featured some of our favorites like SDN, Naturevsfuture, Angelrox, Jai Active Wear, Turk + Taylor, She-Bible, Sust, Kelly Lane, Ryann, Feral Childe, Chulette, and Linda Loudermilk. Christopher Raeburn was all over London Fashion Week’s’s HQ at Somerset House this year, with not one but three displays throughout the exhibition. Having admired Raeburn’s work since we first spotted his lightly crafted aesthetic back in 2008—remember his recycled hot-air-balloon garments for Worn Again?—Ecouterre was on the scene for an up-close-and-personal look at his Autumn/Winter 2010 collection, which focused on utilitarian traits such as functionality and practical layering.

Jennifer Wen Ma’s Hand-Paints Add Moody Drama to Eko-Lab’s Fall ‘10 Line

Jennifer Wen Ma’s beautifully dappled charcoal prints at Ekovaruhuset’s New York Fashion Week show so mesmerized us that we simply had to find out more about the Emmy Award-winning artist and her work. Ma collaborated with Melissa Kirgan and Xing-Zhen Chung-Hilyard of Eko-Lab to create the smoke-hued pieces, which were painted freehand using water-based, low-impact inks. The result? A misty, atmospheric effect reminiscent of Chinese landscape paintings and Zen calligraphy.
