Vaute, Farm Sanctuary Host “Fashion Loves Animals” Vegan Runway Show

VAUTE Couture made yet another appearance at Fashion Loves Animals to celebrate and raise awareness about the benefits of vegan fashion. The fashion show and cocktail party honored Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, President and Creative Director of VAUTE Couture, with benefits going toward Farm Sanctuary’s work. Demonstrating that stylish looks can be accomplished using all vegan labels, Hilgart included Love is Mighty, Brave Gentleman, Matt & Nat and cruelty-free makeup by The Body Shop in the show. And of course, several small furry friends made an appearance throughout the night both on and off the runway.

Reigning Best Supporting Actress Anne Hathaway paired her inordinately…um…“perky” Prada dress at the 2013 Oscars on Sunday with custom cruelty-free stilettos from Giuseppe Zanotti. Requesting faux-leather kicks from leading footwear designers is becoming an M.O. for the newly vegan actress. Hathaway made her rounds at earlier awards in “veganized” Tom Ford gladiator boots and Jimmy Choo peep-toe heels.

If you knew about the origins of the soft down inside your favorite winter jacket or comforter, you might think twice about putting either anywhere near your body. Last year, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals received undercover video footage that showed exactly how those feathers were obtained. Live factory-raised birds are pinned down while workers yank fistfuls of feathers from their bodies, often plucking them so violently that they rip open the animals’ skin.

Alicia Silverstone Urges Holiday Shoppers to Go Down-Free for the Birds

Alicia Silverstone isn’t down with down. The actress-turned-vegan-lifestyle-guru and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are putting up a united front to urge holiday shoppers to avoid products that include duck or goose feathers. In a behind-the-scenes video released Thursday, Silverstone describes the cruelty millions of birds endure as they’re plucked for their feathers each year. “Many birds used for down have their feathers yanked out of their skin, sometimes several times a year, while they are still alive,” she says. “The terrified birds are pinned down while hurried workers rip fistfuls of feathers from their sensitive bodies, often plucking them so violently that they actually tear open the birds’ skin.”

Bottega Veneta Goes Vegan With Purses Made From Japanese Washi Paper

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Bottega Veneta, an Italian luxury house best known for its leather goods, is challenging its status quo by launching a line of sustainable, vegan-friendly handbags. Founded in 1966, the label popularized a centuries-old Medici-era weaving technique when it began interlocking long, thin strips of leather to create its bags. (Apprentices at the Scuola dell Pelletteria Bottega Veneta, near the house’s workshop outside Venice, are still instructed in the art of intrecciato today.) A growing demand for leather alternatives, however, drove creative director Tomas Maier to seek inspiration from another ancient art: Japanese paper-making.

First spotted on the Paris Fashion Week runways in February, the cruelty-free kicks feature soles made from Apinat, a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from natural—and renewable—raw materials. Each wedge of white provides a strong contrast to the faux-croc and pleather uppers, lending the shoes a sporty sneaker-pump vibe that should appeal to girly girls and tomboys alike.

Clae Debuts Vegan Versions of Popular “Bruce,” “Strayhorn” Sneakers

Spotted on the heels of A-listers like Tom Cruise and Jay-Z, Clae’s sneakers have ushered in a new era of “athleisure” footwear for men. For fall, the shoemaker is launching animal-friendly versions of its popular “Bruce”and “Strayhorn” styles. Available this month in limited quantities, the desert-boot-esque vegan Strayhorn marries semi-smooth, textured canvas with pleather accents to create a “sophisticated mid-top for the discerning gentleman,” according to Clae. The company will also reintroduce its Bruce lace-up in three cruelty-free colorways: blue chambray, black denim, and oatmeal denim.

LUSH Launches Vegan-Friendly “Emotional Brilliance” Makeup Line

LUSH’s new “Emotional Brilliance” line of makeup is a conscious coquette’s wet dream—at first blush anyway. The color-wheel’s worth of liquid lip colors, eyeliners, cream shadows, and translucent face powders are completely cruelty-free, but that’s not all it has going for it. The beauty firm also designed the packaging to minimize resources and waste. Each bottle, made from widely recyclable glass, is screwed shut with a reincarnated version of LUSH’s signature black pots. The applicator wands are intentionally shorter than industry standards to reduce the amount of plastic. Even the hangtag is basically a slip of paper attached to a hair elastic.
