“The idea actually came from one of my sales associates who does not use or wear leather products,” Kate McGregor, KAIGHT’s proprietor, tells Ecouterre. “She loved Collina Strada’s spring collection but was frustrated that it was made predominately of vegetable-tanned leather. It really brought home the fact that many who choose not to wear leather aren’t able to purchase or wear many of the trendier, fun designers and have to opt for only vegan labels.”
The idea came from a KAIGHT sales associate who loved Collina Strada’s spring collection but eschewed leather.
For McGregor and Collina Strada’s Hillary Taymour, making the bags in New York City was a given for several reasons. Manufacturing products locally guarantees quicker turnaround times, tighter control over the production process, and often, better craftsmanship, McGregor says. “It’s important to support local sewers and factories,” she adds. “It also keeps the carbon footprint on a product low.”
Now available at KAIGHT’s brick-and-mortar and online storefronts, the bags are only the beginning. “I think it reinforces that we are here to provide our customers with the best selection of green products,” McGregor says, “and that we have the ability to work with designers that we like to produce collections that specifically meet the needs of our customers.”
Plus, as a token of appreciation for choosing cruelty-free, KAIGHT will donate 10 percent of the proceeds from each bag to the BARC Animal Shelter in Brooklyn.
