Drawing upon inspiration from Art Forms in Nature, the 1904 book of lithographs by German biologist Ernst Haeckel, Lavuk’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection is an ode to fishes, jellyfish, cephalopods, and the beauty of all underwater creatures. The easy, everyday ensembles that floated down the runway paid subtle tribute to the wide blue yonder, including trompe l’oeil sailor prints, soft coral hues, and hemp-webbing details. The resulting effect? Clean, relaxed silhouettes that brought tailored comfort to the fore.

UNDER THE SEA

To give her garments a watery appearance, designer Natasha Gindin hand-dyed her organic-cotton fabrics with natural indigo. Despite the singular pigment, the fabric presented myriad tonal variations and gradations of color, from rich cobalt to a barely there cerulean.

Natural indigo dyes imparted myriad tonal variations and gradations of color in the fabric.

The rest of Lavuk’s pieces skirted between sensual and sporty: drapey one-shoulder tops, slinky silk rompers, flirty A-line miniskirts, and tailored seersucker dresses, all of which were perfectly accented by Tiffany Kunz’s delicate accessories.
