This year, the nation’s biggest shopping day, Black Friday, will get a green transformation. Responsible retailer United by Blue is asking consumers to rethink the mega-purchasing day, and instead turn their attention to cleaning up the green space around them. Rechristened “Blue Friday,” the retailer is not only opening later to give customers a chance to clean up in the morning, but also offering free cleanup kits to those who can’t wait to get started.

The day after Thanksgiving, consumers flock to big retail stores at ungodly hours, in hopes of snatching up incredible deals and bargain basement prices. United by Blue hopes that instead of rising early for sales, their customers will get up at the break of dawn to flock to their local beach, park, or waterway, and fill one bag with trash.

As an incentive, the company is handing out clean up kits, which include a pair of gloves, two trash bags (one for trash, one for recycling), and a quick cleanup guide. Once you’ve collected a bag full of garbage from your chosen site, share a picture of you and the beautified area on social media with the tag #bluemovement. As if having beautiful surroundings wasn’t enough, United by Blue will send you a UBB x Klean Kanteen steel as a thank you for helping the earth!

The cheeky clean up plan furthers United by Blue’s mission of removing one pound of trash from the world’s oceans for each product they sell. Get up and clean out! You can go shopping later.
