Accompanying the label’s revival is From Somewhere’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, imbued with “new energy” from designer Brandy Easter, a recent graduate of Central Saint Martins, and patten-cutter Jack Kindred-Boothby.

The result is classic From Somewhere with a slight shift in point of view. Delicate cashmere jerseys offer a patchwork wonderland of color and pattern. Chunky angora-merino knits brandish bold, contrasting textures. Tweed separates, lined with silk, round the edges of otherwise mannish workwear.
“The inspiration is always part of our original story: what we discover, how to reuse it, how to continue to experiment with the aesthetics of upcycling in a creative way,” de Castro tells Ecouterre. “[Easter’s] vision is quite eastern, which I adore.”
From Somewhere is also delving into ecommerce—a first for the company. “Ecommerce is new for us, so we wanted to turn it upside down with the idea the your online can feel just like your local artisans’ store,” de Castro says. “We want an intimate experience, and as always, we want to tell stories, about our beautiful waste and the people who support us.”

As far as businesses go, From Somewhere is far from conventional. Selling clothes is the least of what it does. “Over the years, From Somewhere has been about so many other things,from raising awareness to collaborations,” she adds. “Through the online [space], we hope that we will reach a wider public.”
De Castro teases the first of several ongoing features: a series of interviews with the “incredible women” who have worn and supported the label since its inception. (October’s spotlight will fall on supermodel-turned-guerilla gardener Mak Gilchrist and Peckham artist Anna McDowell.)
Other plans are in the works, including one that recasts the From Somewhere studio as a “hub for innovation.” On the specifics, however, de Castro demurs. “It’s all very organic/guerrilla, very exciting, very different,” she says. “The aim is to continue like this, on a larger scale. And we have one amazing new project in the pipeline, but it’s a secret until January!”
