Helen Hunt hit the 2013 Oscars on Sunday not in an overblown confection by Georgio Armani or Dior, but rather an unfussy midnight-blue silk-satin gown from H&M. The Best Supporting Actress nominee didn’t make that decision on a lark. H&M recently named Global Green U.S.A., the American affiliate of Green Cross International and a cause Hunt supports, as the U.S. beneficiary of the retailer’s newly launched clothing-recycling program. Another connection? Hunt was on the host committee of the nonprofit’s annual pre-Oscar bash, which doubled on Wednesday as a celebration of the partnership.

MAD ABOUT BLUE

While working the red carpet, Hunt made special mention of “Solar for Sandy,” a Global Green initiative to use photovoltaic technology to rebuild hurricane-devastated neighborhoods in New Jersey and New York.

Despite her career-defining role as Jamie Buchanan on television’s Mad About You, this isn’t Hunt’s first time playing the major leagues. She received the Oscar for Best Actress in 2010 for playing a single mother with an asthmatic son in As Good as It Gets. “[H&M] made a beautiful dress and they are going green,” Hunt, who complemented with $700,000 worth of jewelry from Martin Katz, told E! host Ryan Seacrest. “It’s a win, win, win!”

The feeling, it seems, is mutual. “It’s an honor and joy to design this gown for one of the most amazing actresses in the world,” Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s head of design, said in a statement. “We admire Helen Hunt and it feels fantastic to create a gown for such a memorable occasion.”
