H&M Asks Customers, Employees to Help It “Make a Difference”

The H&M Conscious Foundation wants to put power into the hands of their employees and customers. Thanks to an over $78 million donation from the Stefan Persson family, the company will ask the public which three issues the fund should support. Issues such as clean water, strengthening women, education, safeguarding natural resources and reduction of poverty through self-empowerment will be voted on by you, starting October 22nd by voting at makeadifference.hm.com.

H&M has modeled the Conscious Foundation after the UN Millennium Development Goals, taking a slice of responsibility for the communities where the company manufactures its clothing. Within these communities, company has consulted with experts including Archibishop Desmond Tutu, Sir Richard Branson and Alek Wek, to hone in on the five major issues that customers will be voting on.

Once the three social and environmental issues are chosen, H&M will partner with three world-renowned organizations that fight globally against these issues. The H&M Conscious Foundation will also delve into issues on a local level, initiating local programs in areas where H&M produces, manufactures and sources.

The Conscious Foundation seeks to set up a program and initiative of long term sustainable development, which will be strengthened by listening to the public’s ideas. From October 22-29, H&M customers from around the world can weigh in for free, on the Make a Difference website, which will be available in 18 languages.
