Danit Peleg set her sights high when she started her graduate collection for her degree in Fashion Design at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. She planned to design and print an entire collection of 3D printed clothing using a printer that is suitable for home use. The five-piece collection of flexible, flowing clothes shows the capabilities of what is possible now with 3D printers and new materials, plus a lot of man hours! The new collection took 9 months and over 2000 hours of printing.
Israeli fashion student, Danit Peleg didn’t know the first thing about 3D printing when she decided upon her graduate collection, but that didn’t seem to stop her.
She spent nine months learning, testing, researching, designing and then printing her collection of five very different looks and even the shoes. She used a team of Witbox home printers for the collection, which took about 400 hours for each look, totally over 2000 hours of print time.
Peleg worked with experts in the Tel Aviv makers community, including 3D-printing lab TechFactoryPlus and the XLN community to fine tune her ideas into workable designs. One of the keys to Peleg’s creations was the use of a relatively new material called FilaFlex filament that is more flexible than PLA.
Some of her textile designs were inspired by Andreas Bastian’s Mesostructured Cellular Materials that made for fabric that was flexible, bouncy and even draped.
Peleg’s hope is that her work brings the fashion industry one step closer to bespoke printing clothing at home.
