MONSTER MASH

Working in pairs, the students took the castoff garments apart, then set about re-piecing them into something new. “My partner Rene Bedell and I tried shredding and unravelling knit pieces,” says Juan Torkel Spade. “[And] also knitting our own individual sleeves and trouser legs to incorporate into our design.”

The crew also had the opportunity to bring some of their creatures to life in a film screened during the event. “Finally wearing our work and being a physical part of it was really exciting,” says Smith. “Seeing it beamed on to the big screen in the main courtyard at Somerset House was amazing and totally unexpected.”

Dr. Noki, who mentored the students, is no slouch in the upcycling department, either. As head of Noki’s House of Sustainability, a line of refashioned clothing with a streetwise edge, the London-based designer has secured celebrity clients such as Beth Ditto, Kylie Minogue, M.I.A, and Skin. The master was impressed. “All the students worked incredibly hard during the project,” he says. “It wasn’t always my intention to exhibit so many of their designs but, thanks to the British Fashion Council’s Estethica platform, the project has been pushed further, wider, and faster than I ever imagined.”
