Consider Lady Gaga’s hackles raised. After People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals publicly branded her a “turncoat” for sporting fur at recent appearances, the pop diva fired back with a thinly veiled indictment of the animal-rights group and its “violent, abusive, and childish” campaigns. “I have truly always stayed away from skinned fur, especially [since] I have never been able to afford a nice one,” she addressed her fans in a blog post, winkingly titled “Furgate Part 1,” on Wednesday. “But this does not mean my morals are rigid and that I won’t bend at the sight of an absolute art piece of a coat.”
The self-proclaimed “Mother Monster” considers herself someone who “appreciates and adores the beauty of animals in fashion, but…not a strict vegan.” She also stopped short of admitting that the pelts were real. “I am choosing not to comment on whether or not the furs I purchase are faux fur-pile or real because I would think it hypocritical not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cow hide, leather, lamb, alligator, “Kermit,” and not to mention meat, that I have already worn,” she said.
Where you see an animal carcass, Lady Gaga sees a “museum pièce de résistance,” she said.
Where some may see an animal carcass, however, Gaga sees a “museum pièce de résistance,” a view she asks her fans to respect as much as she respects theirs. As for PETA, which cautioned her against becoming a target like “the mindless Kim Kardashian,” the “Born This Way” singer couldn’t resist a final dig: “Save your flour to make bread for the children who are hungry,” she wrote, alluding to the PETA supporter who “flour-bombed” the reality star in March. “And Kim Kardashian is fabulous.”
Gaga’s fans flooded the comments with messages of support—and disgust. “I don’t understand how you can put your taste in fashion and art above the life of a beautiful creature,” a fan named Alec Haas wrote. “Animals are not ours…they are not for us to use as clothes,” another replied. “And Kim Kardarshian is just a futile person.”
