ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

Much of Raja’s inspiration derives from her childhood in India, where she was exposed to intricate handworked products such as baskets, jewelry, and embroidered clothing. “All were masterfully created from age-old techniques which spanned centuries; crafts which, previous to industrialization, supported nomadic living in remote areas and autonomous communities,” she explains.

Raja discovered a gaping disconnect between the way products were fashioned and their value to society.

After arriving in New York City to attend the Parsons The New School for Design, Raja discovered a gaping disconnect between the way products were fashioned and their value to society. The industrial age had made craftspeople around the globe redundant.

Love is Mighty is her attempt to reverse the trend. “Technology and nature give us abundant choices and I’m offering the consumer a choice,” she says. By using reclaimed tapestries, some which have been around for 100 years, and motifs drawn from her native landscape, Raja showcases the centuries-old quilting and embroidery techniques of northwestern tribes such as the Rabari and the Meghwal.

Raja produces all her shoes in a 100 percent vegan factory in India, something she’s very proud of. “I believe style need not be sacrificed to fulfill a commitment to the rights and welfare of animals,” she says.

Buyers can check out Love is Mighty at “Accessories The Show” at the Javitz Center in New York City from January 8 to 10.
