Tired of monkeying around with the same old dungarees? Monkee Genes has more denim options than you can shake a banana at, including a range of loose-fitting chinos that will finally trump the decade-old drainpipe rut for men. The British label, which traffics in fair-trade and organic denim, is the only jean company certified by the Soil Association, whose strict accreditation process includes factory spot checks and reams of paper evidence throughout the supply chain.
Why is this important? In the European Union, anyone can call their product “organic” and get away with it, but only the Soil Association imprimatur ensures that a product really does meet the highest standards of sustainability and quality. Armed with this seal of approval, Monkee Genes has gone from strength to strength, first by joining People Tree at Prince Charles’ A Garden Party to Make a Difference” in September, then by scoring high-profile fans like singer Peter Andre and former X-factor judge Cheryl Cole.
Monkee Genes’ motto: no slave or child labor, blood, sweat, or tears.
After noticing harem trousers on the trendy men in and around East London last season, we pleaded with Monkee Genes (by way of the Twittersphere). To this writer’s surprise, the company replied, “keep an eye out, Christine ;)” Six months later, tailored, harem-esque chinos made their way into the Monkee Genes repertoire. The lesson: Ask and ye shall receive.
