OUR BODIES, OURSELVES
Kizhner’s jewelry isn’t for wimps. The “Blood Bridge,” for instance, features spikes on each end for insertion into a vein on the lower arm. The continuous flow of blood turns the wheel, mustering enough kinetic energy to convert into electrical power. The “Blinker,” affixed on the bridge of the nose between the eyes, translates every eyelid flutter into an electrical pulse. The “E-pulse Conductor” mines energy directly from the nerves of the spinal cord.
The torturous nature of Kizhner’s accessories are meant to give you pause. “I hope that the project will make people think about the possibility that this could be their future, and make them think about whether it is the future they want or whether we can do something different today to avoid it,” she says. “Will we be willing to sacrifice our bodies in order to produce more energy? My intention is to provoke a discussion.”
