Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have drawn the ire of animal activists for releasing a $16,900 backpack made from a motley array of animal fur. The former child actors, who received the 2012 Council of Fashion Designers of America Award earlier this month for their work with The Row, prompted People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to dust off its old sobriquets for the twin titans: “Hairy-Kate and Trashley,” otherwise known as the “Trollsen Twins.”

FUR FURY

“If it looks like a troll and acts like a troll, it’s probably a Trollsen Twin—or someone wearing one of their new $16,000 totes, which are made from the fur and skins of innocent animals,” the animal-rights group tells Ecouterre in a statement. “What the Olsens lack in creativity, they try to make up for in shock value. Sadly, it’s the foxes, calves, and alligators—who often have the fur ripped off them while they are still conscious and able to feel pain—who pay the dearest price.”

A black-alligator version of the backpack appeared in 2011 for the eye-watering price of $34,000.

The bag has at least one fan: celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, who hailed it as a pre-fall staple that combines both “comfort and class.” “Coupled with a blush blouse, skinny jeans, and a bold boot, an of-the-moment backpack will bear the weight of your everyday essentials with elegance and ease,” she wrote on her blog, The Zoe Report.

At less than $17,000, some might even consider the carryall a bona fide steal. A black-alligator version of the backpack appeared in 2011 for the eye-watering price of $34,000.
