Most people wouldn’t describe L’Avventura, a moody 1960 Italian film about a young woman’s disappearance during a boating trip on the Mediterranean, as the “epitome of optimism.” Then again, most people aren’t John Patrick. The Organic designer paid tribute to the Michelangelo Antonioni classic at New York Fashion Week on Tuesday with a Spring/Summer 2014 collection that exemplified the label’s slouchy yet sensual brand of understated glamour. “Seeing this film once again lit my imagination,” says Patrick, who trotted out a convoy of nebulous silk and organic cotton-voile dresses, high-waisted circle skirts in wool, and ultrafine recycled cotton-and-nylon knits.

The collection’s palette runs a gamut of moods, from luminous washes of mint and pale pink to more-confident strokes of aubergine, bronze, and indigo. The extremes serve to create a “sense of individualism and free spirit,” according to Patrick.
