A DIY denim-filled mattress! Everyone’s focused on creating a natural sleeping environment these days, but many can’t afford an all-natural mattress. Open Your Eyes has made a green business out of helping people who’d like to make their own mattresses. The Recycled Denim Challenge inspired them to create new covers that can be stuffed at home with recycled clothing, including your favorite retired denim jeans, to build a new mattress! A combination of natural, 100 percent cotton and buckwheat hulls sewn into sections over a soft base, this is all you need for a good night’s sleep (without all the chemicals).

To Recycled Denim Mattress: Would you please send the directions to make this to my email? I am confused looking at it and only see a tiny bit of denim. What is the outside material and where do you find the buckwheat seeds to soften? Excellent idea!! Email reply to: skstoc@aol.com
Thank YOU!!
Hi,
The DIY futon mattress can be made by folding natural cotton fabric into three sections. After you hem all the edges, lay your fabric out and fold the two long outer edges into the center and pin. Sew horizontal seams every 4″.
You will then have pockets that open from the center of the mattress’s underside. Now stuff with your choice of recycled blankets, t-shirts or for a nice firm mattress, denim. Photo 4 above show the underside which reveals the denim “stuffing”.
Buckwheat hulls are amazing to sleep on and will even out the ridges of your futon base. I can customize a kit for you if you are interested in making your own mattress.
Visit my store by clicking the link above labeled +Open Your Eyes where I sell the pre-made DIY futon covers, buckwheat hull mattress toppers, and loose buckwheat hulls for the DIY crowd!
Thank you so much for your comment and your vote.
Best regards, Lynne
