Over the course of six months, Alison King converted more than 120 pairs of jeans into an 8.5×10.5- foot area rug. The jeans were sourced from her own closet, as well as from her friends and friends of friends. Alison cut the all the unwanted denim she collected into long strips, sewed them together—a la rug braiding techniques—and crocheted herself a rug. Many of the jeans had been worn for decades, and once her DIY project was finished she ended up with a 100-plus-pound rug full of everyone’s memories. Using this old-school technique, she was also able to pay homage to her grandmother, who herself, hooked and braided beautiful rugs.
