British actor and comedian Ricky Gervais is getting behind the Humane Cosmetics Act, which was introduced to Congress earlier this month. The federal bill calls for the United States to end cosmetics tests on animals once and for all, as well as the sale of cosmetics tested on animals. The Muppets Most Wanted star has been a longtime animal-rights advocate, and is happy to be the face of the campaign.

The Humane Society of the United States’s Be Cruelty-Free U.S.A. campaign is lobbying Congress to end the archaic practice of testing cosmetics on live animals. The bill , which was introduced by Representatives Jim Moran and Michael Grimm, would call for the end of testing on rabbits, mice and guinea pigs, which are routinely used to test cosmetics and healthy and beauty aids such as shampoo, mascara, and lotions. In addition to making animal testing for cosmetics unlawful, the bill would make selling or transporting cosmetics that were developed or manufactured using animal testing also unlawful.

A similar ban has already been acted in Gervais’ native country of Great Britain, as well as the countries of the European Union. With Gervais’ urging, the Humane Cosmetics Act hopes to rally enough public support to make Congress take the bill seriously. Show your support by signing their on-line petition and help end animal testing once and for all.
