Congratulations to Stewart + Brown’s Karen Stewart and Howard Brown for winning “Most Sustainable Brand” at the 2011 WGSN Global Fashion Awards! The eco-fashion pioneer faced some pretty tough competition in the final round, including such innovators as People Tree, Levi Strauss, and Marks & Spencer. “This is a big win for us and for independent sustainable designers in general,” Brown tells Ecouterre. “It was a juried award and we were up against multibillion dollar brands that have well-funded and publicized sustainability initiatives.”
Hosted by celebrity stylist Robert Verdi at New York City’s prestigious Gotham Hall, the awards featured special guest presenters such as Whitney Port, Liam Gallagher, Charlotte Ronson, and Ariana Rockefeller. Behind the scenes, a distinguished panel of judges included Orsola de Castro, designer of From Somewhere and co-founder of Estethica at London Fashion Week; Tamsin Lejeune, founder and managing director of the Ethical Fashion Forum; and Nicola Woods, who designs Beautiful Soul.
For the husband-and-wife duo of Stewart and Brown, the award validates the progress sustainable fashion has made since they founded their label in 2002.
For the husband-and-wife duo of Stewart and Brown, the award validates the progress sustainable fashion has made since they founded their label in 2002. “This award is proof that the sustainable fashion movement is from the bottom up and small brands with a purpose and vision can both inspire and lead the industry giants, such as Levi’s, in this category,” Brown says. “The critics were wrong, people do care about organic.”
