Feel-good style gets collegiate with Styleta, a nonprofit network of university students that rounds up donations of designer threads to raise money for women’s initiatives. Harnessing the power of e-commerce and social networking—we wouldn’t expect any less from plugged-in Gen Y—the Harvard-based organization tackles its triple bottom line with youthful exuberance: money for charity, less landfilled trash, and nonprofit work experience for its degree-pursuing staff.
CO-EDS WITH A CAUSE
To usher in back-to-school season, Styleta recruited six student designers—including Stacy Longo, the winner of the 2009 Project Earth Day Student Competition—for its inaugural design challenge. The winning designer, who is selected through group voting, will be awarded the rights to sell her pieces on Styleta, along with a feature on the site and its newsletter. Plus, 10 voters will each win a $20 gift certificate to Styleta’s shopping portal.
“Styleta’s aim is to use something fun and creative that we all love—fashion—to do social good,” says Yifan Zhang, the network’s founder and CEO. “This Student Designer Challenge embraces our mission by featuring both our student designers’ wonderful work and its ability to raise funds for charity.”
