Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Updates “Higg Index” to Include Footwear

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition unveiled Wednesday a new iteration of its “Higg Index,” an open-source tool that measures garment sustainability across the industry supply chain. Eighteen months in the making, version 2.0 now boasts expanded environmental and social coverage, a new footwear component, along with a web-based interface that allows manufacturers and brands to share data, materials, and processes for “greater transparency and validation.”

“We are very excited to share this new version of the Higg Index with our members,” says Jason Kibbey, executive director of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, a trade association comprised of brands, retailers, manufacturers, government and non-governmental organizations, and academic experts that represents more than a third of the global apparel and footwear market. “Not only have we expanded the index to be more comprehensive, but we’ve also added a new level of engagement where our members can interact and share knowledge and assessments on a level that hasn’t been done before, and speed the adoption of sustainable measures within the value chain.”

Higg Index 2.0 includes a new online platform where members can share data and assessments across their supply chains.

Kibbey believes that the update will help coalition members such as Adidas, Esprit, Gap, H&M, Levi Strauss, Nike, Marks & Spencer, Patagonia, Timberland, Target, and Walmart make healthier decisions across their supply chains. “After being used for more than a year by our members and others in the apparel industry, we’ve created Higg 2.0 to be more interactive and transparent, allowing companies to better share and validate data, and evaluate environmental impacts at all levels—from materials sourcing to factories to the brand level,” he adds.
