Some of the companies Robinson is also committed to promoting through her site are brands that have a more sustainable vision for the fashion industry. That may be ta company campaigning for higher environmental standards, improved labor practices for garment workers and farmers, or a focus on teaching people how to sew, knit, mend, and upcycle.

MAKE DO AND MEND

Want to know where the nearest sewing café or cobbler is? Have a closet full of clothes that you don’t know how to make fresh and new? The Good Wardrobe offers access to stylists and tailors, in and around London, to help give new eyes to your tired clothes.

One of the services it offers is”Sew It Forward,” which encourages people to pass on their sewing skills.

One of the services it offers is “Sew It Forward,” an initiative that encourages people to pass on their sewing skills. Guests at The Good Wardrobe’s events have learn how to save their favorite garments to keep them alive just that much longer. Plus, says Robinson, in learning how to sew, knit, or darn they have a better understanding of the work that goes into making a garment and they are more likely to think twice about buying something new.

The site is currently in beta but Robinson says the aim is for it to become a comprehensive resource over time.

“We are currently busy adding to our ‘long-life’ style directory,” she says, adding that the sum of the site’s knowledge is dependent on its members. “You can already search for clothing hire in London, dress agencies, local sewing cafes or even natural moth repellents. Soon you’ll be able to review shops, sites and services in the directory to help others find what they are looking for too.”

SEW IT FORWARD

One of the ways she hopes to get the message out to the masses is by offering a credit functionality so forum members can start to “thank” one another.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for them to dress stylishly and sustainably,” Robinson says.

“We are working to create partnerships with businesses who want to see a more sustainable fashion industry. Through their sponsorship and the knowledge sharing on The Good Wardrobe forum, we will aim to offer some support to carefully selected charities working in sustainable fashion.”

How does Robinson think The Good Wardrobe can change the way people shop?

“So often I hear, ‘I can’t afford sustainable fashion,’ or ‘I don’t know where to look,’” she says. “We want to make it as easy as possible for them to dress stylishly and sustainably. If we show those in doubt that sustainable fashion can be affordable and help them find it, then they will not have any excuse.”
