The joint venture, dubbed NikeCraft, launches on the eve of Sach’s Space Program: Mars, an installation that will recast the 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall at Manhattan’s Armory Park into an “immersive space odyssey.”
Sachs and Nike utilized materials that had never before been applied to sportswear, including Mars Rover airbags.
To create the “Mars Yard” shoe, “Chester” trench coat, “Marsfly” jacket, and lightweight tote, Sachs and Nike utilized materials that had never before been applied to sportswear, including Vectran fabric from Mars Excursion Rover airbags, mainsails for boats, and even NASA spacesuits.
In Sach’s vision of the future, zipper pulls double as storage containers, parachute cords can be fashioned into emergency tourniquets, and screen-printed graphics such as the periodic table of elements provide visual interest with purpose.
