“Every single material has some story to it,” said Nicole Vaunt and Najva Sol told Ecouterre after the show. The duo favors mostly bio-based fabrics such as Modal derived from beech trees. “Modal has a 10-to-20-times higher yield than cotton for the same amount of water,” they added.

Sustainability isn’t just a guiding principle, it’s built into Vaunt & Sol’s DNA.

Vaunt & Sol has its black Modal knit in California, and its ponte di roma—the firm’s only full synthetic—knit in NYC. The line also includes some undyed organic cotton and a washed silk charmeuse.

Sustainability isn’t just a guiding principle, it’s built into Vaunt & Sol’s DNA. “Sustainable culture and responsible living have been part of our lives for years,” Vaunt and Sol said. “Both of us have spent our entire lives thrifting and up-cycling clothes in lieu of buying fast fashion at the mall like most of our peers.”

Manhattan’s Garment District is a sleeping giant, but perhaps not for long. “It’s exciting to learn the history of NYC as a garment powerhouse and feel like we are a small cog in a big movement that could return this city to its former fashion glory,” they said. “We know how important domestic manufacturing is from so many angles: ethics, quality control, economics, etc., and we’re committed to intentional sourcing of all of our products and services.”
