Constructed in New York City, where Hilgart is now based, the critter-friendly toppers are as warm as they are “super crazy soft,” according to the designer. While she admits that the fabrics are “not perfect,” they’re on their way. “I will keep trying and trying and trying to better them more and more, I promise you. We are getting there,” she says.
This season, Vaute Couture is introducing a waterproof canvas, made in New York City and waxed with an all-organic, vegan wax.
Hilgart focused on timeless silhouettes for good reason. “Since we wear our coats for months on end in the winter, I want to create pieces that feel dressed up even when it’s gray out and you’re in a tee and leggings underneath,” Hilgart tells Ecouterre.
Inspired—and named for—some of Vaute Couture’s favorite customers, each piece combines recyclable, American-made Polartec fabric and Teijin’s Recycled Closed Loop Zero Waste Satin Ripstop with deadstock metal buttons or fastenings made from engraved tagua nut.
