Looking to bump up your spring wardrobe with a stylish yet super-functional coat for your nocturnal bike rides? Angella Mackey’s new Vega One is a lightweight illuminated coat inspired by the night. Perfect for an evening on the town, as well as your commute there and back, the coat comes equipped with ultrabright LED lights that alert oncoming traffic of your presence. An update of the Canadian designer’s 2010 prototype, the Vega One is now more washable, reliable, user-friendly, and affordable. And unlike many concept pieces we feature, it’s available for purchase.
LED THE WAY
Made in Borås, a small town just outside Gothenburg in Sweden (where Mackey is now based), the knee-length trench is the height of urban chic, complete with six metallic snaps, a satin stain-resistant finish, and a waist-cinching belt. Indistinguishable from a regular coat in the day, the Vega One includes four LEDs—two bright-white lights on the front and two red ones on the back—that shine brightly when night approaches. A handy battery-operated switch hidden on the front gives you the option of solid or flashing modes.

Unlike the previous version of the coat, the electronics for the Vega One are contained in a single “light strip” that can be removed for washing. Designed for fun, fashion, and increased visibility at night, the Vega One makes safety first a cinch.
